Producers pick Avatar, Trek, District 9 for best film nods

Want a little preview of how the Oscars might go this year? Check out the Producers Guild of America, which this morning announced their nominees for best picture, a list that includes Avatar, District 9 and Star Trek. The PGA will announce the winner on Jan. 24 at the Hollywood Palladium.

The PGA version of Best Picture is the Darryl F. Zanuck Producer of the Year Award, a category which this year includes the sci-fi films, as well as An Education, The Hurt Locker, Inglourious Basterds, Invictus, Precious, the animated Up and Up in the Air.

The Darryl F. Zanuck Producer of the Year Award has predicted the Oscar best picture winner 13 out of its 20 years, which is good enough to make the PGAs a key indicator of what's to come Oscar-wise. The PGA also followed the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences by expanding their best picture category to 10 nominees this year.

The producers for the sci-fi trio include James Cameron and Jon Landau for Avatar, Carolynne Cunningham and Peter Jackson for District 9 and J.J. Abrams and Damon Lindelof for Star Trek.

The animated award, the PGA Producer of the Year Award in Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures, also includes Up, as well as Tim Burton's 9, Coraline, Fantastic Mr. Fox and The Princess and the Frog.

One other interesting sci-fi nom was AMC's The Prisoner for the miniseries and movie category, the David L. Wolper Producer of the Year Award in Long-Form Television. The category also includes nominations for Georgia O'Keeffe, Grey Gardens, Little Dorrit and Taking Chance.

Brace yourselves. This is only the start of Hollywood congratulating itself on a job well done last year. The Directors Guild of America's nominations are due Thursday, and nominations for the 82nd Academy Awards will be announced on Feb. 2 at 5:30 a.m. PST.

Who do you think should win? Who do you think (cough, Moon) was left out?
