News briefs: Crazies opens OK; Nikita's Michael cast

The remake of George A. Romero's sci-fi horror movie The Crazies opened in third place on the Feb. 26 weekend, taking in about $16.5 million domestically, while Avatar added another $14 million domestically and $36.1 million internationally to raise its worldwide take to $2.5 billion; Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief, meanwhile, dropped to fifth place, with $9.8 million in its third weekend, for a domestic total of $71.2 million.

Shane West (ER) will play Michael in The CW's Nikita, a new version of La Femme Nikita, opposite Maggie Q as the title character, the Futon Critic reported.

Fox 2000 has acquired film rights to British author Catherine Fisher's young-adult fantasy book Incarceron, about a young boy who lives in a prison that is a complete society; outside the prison, the world is stuck in the 17th century and run by computers, Variety reported.

New York City's annual Tribeca Film Festival has announced that it will be kicking-off its ninth year on April 21 with the premiere of Shrek Forever After, the 3-D fourth installment of DreamWorks Animation's film series.
