Twilight kicks Star Trek's butt at People's Choice Awards

Sixty million people voted and they chose vampires, as Twilight, True Blood and The Vampire Diaries cleaned up at the 36th annual People's Choice Awards last night. The CW's Supernatural, which has featured vamps more than once, also won for Favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy Show.

In fact, it was a night filled with nominees and winners from sci-fi and fantasy films and television shows. The big winner was (no surprise) Twilight, which sank its teeth into Favorite Movie, beating out Star Trek and Harry Potter. The film also won Favorite Franchise, Favorite On-Screen Team (Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner) and Favorite Breakout Male Actor for werewolf hottie Lautner.

Sexy HBO vamp drama True Blood took Favorite TV Obsession, while The CW's The Vampire Diaries (which has its own sexy, if more fully clothed, vamp thing going on) staked Favorite New TV Drama.

Queen Latifah returned for her fourth year hosting the people's awards show, where the nominees and winners are chosen based on online votes. Latifah opened the show with a name-dropping song and then did two skits, first a hysterical Paranormal Activity takeoff (which managed to work in Cloris Leachman in leather with a whip) and then a Twilight bit that placed Latifah in the film talking to Pattinson's character, Edward.

Other sci-fi- and fantasy-related winners included Johnny Depp as Favorite Movie Actor of the Decade, Hugh Jackman as Favorite Action Star, Jim Carrey as Favorite Comedic Star, the animated Up as Favorite Family Movie and The Big Bang Theory for Favorite TV Comedy. The other big winner for the night was Sandra Bullock, who has her own sci-fi connections (Premonition, The Lake House), with a win as Favorite Movie Actress, and her recent film, The Proposal, as Favorite Comedy Movie.

But even winners that had nothing to do with sci-fi or fantasy seemed to have a connection, such as Buffy's Alyson Hannigan for Favorite TV Comedy Actress, Get Smart's Steve Carell for Favorite TV Comedy Actor, Roswell's Katherine Heigl for Favorite TV Drama Actress, Monsters vs. Aliens' Hugh Laurie as Favorite TV Drama Actor and the sci-fi inspired Lady Gaga for Favorite Breakout Music Artist.

So what do you think? Should Twilight have been the big winner?
