Chevy Chase: Hot Tub Time Machine earns its 'R'

The R-rated trailer for the upcoming sci-fi time-travel comedy Hot Tub Time Machine suggests it is the latest in a string of raunchy guy movies, and co-star Chevy Chase promised it will have its share of profanity.

"It has to be [R] because I've never heard so many F words in my life," Chase said in a group interview Wednesday in Pasadena, Calif., where he was promoting his NBC comedy Community at the Television Critics Association summer press tour. "I guess that gives it an automatic R. In fact, I'm the only guy who doesn't swear, frankly."

In the movie, a quartet of idiot travels back in time via the title hot tub to 1986, the era of their youth. Chase plays a mysterious hot-tub repairman. He vouched for the film's edgy language. The movie stars John Cusack, Craig Robinson, Clark Duke, Rob Corddry, Kate Walsh and Sebastian Stan.

The film wrapped only recently, and Chase said that he has not seen a rough cut, let alone a final cut, but he recalls a lot of R-rated antics. "I don't know where it stands at this point, but we had a lot of fun, and we did play with it," he said.

The F-bombs come mostly courtesy of the actors. Chase praised Cusack's ability to add to scenes on the fly.

"It's a very, very funny movie, and it's the way I like to work, and obviously John does, which is you do what's scripted on the take, you get that, and then you improvise the rest of the day instead," Chase continued. "So [there's] a lot of funny stuff coming out of that. I'm really looking forward to that movie coming out."

MGM will release Hot Tub Time Machine on Feb. 26, 2010.
