E3: Konami unveils new Castlevania game, Lords of Shadow

Konami unveiled Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, the latest installment in the adventure video game, at a press conference at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles today.

Hideo Kojima, Konami Digital Entertainment Japan executive corporate officer, made the announcement to a screaming audience.

The game is being designed by the Spanish company Mercurysteam, along with Kojima Entertainment.

We were given very little information, but we got a sneak peek at the trailer, which shows a knight battling enormous rock monsters, giant dogs, werewolves and a giant spider, as well as using a spin attack on a group of enemies. The environments were beautifully rendered, from the giant gothic castle to the surrounding forests.

The voice cast includes Patrick Stewart, Jason Isaacs, Robert Carlyle and Natasha McElhone.

Producer Dave Cox from Konami Digital Entertainment Europe told the crowd that this is a brand-new adventure on a much grander scale. He called it a "fresh re-imagining," not constrained by the original game.

Cox added that the story is about a hero looking for retribution and salvation and that it explores the supernatural. (In case you've been wondering about the mysterious mask on the Konami site, it's for this game.) The voice-over at the end of the trailer said, "The mask is a powerful device. ... Can it really bring the dead back?"

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow will be released sometime in 2010 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. (And nothing was said, but the title screen showed the PSN and Xbox Live logos ... maybe some online play?)
