News briefs: Third Langdon film due, Transformers on DVD

Variety reports that Columbia Pictures is moving forward on a third installment of the Robert Langdon franchise, based on Dan Brown's books; Brown has announced that his next installment of the series is The Lost Symbol, which will be published in the U.S. and Canada by Doubleday on Sept. 15.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura will produce Lions, Tigers and Bears, based on a comic book, for Paramount Pictures, Variety reported.

Electronic versions of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy were released Monday, with The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrun planned for next month and other works expected before the end of the year, publisher HarperCollins told the Associated Press. Tolkien's books, like other older works, were published well before the digital age, and negotiations for e-rights are often time-consuming.

Shout! Factory, in collaboration with Hasbro, will release a DVD box set of the first season of the original Transformers animated TV series in a 25th anniversary edition on June 16; Michael Bay's feature-film sequel, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, opens June 24.
