Hellboy Ron Perlman updates us on his various sci-fi projects

Ron Perlman, a favorite in genre film and television circles, recently spoke to SCI FI Wire about his most current projects, Mutant Chronicles, in which he stars with Thomas Jane and John Malkovich, and Season of the Witch, with Nicolas Cage and Perlman as sidekicks.

Now, in edited excerpts from our exclusive conversation, the actor talks about The Devil's Tomb, which has wrapped, and Bubba Nosferatu: Curse of the She-Vampires, Don Coscarelli's long-awaited and soon-to-shoot Bubba Ho-tep prequel movie. Perlman also talked about the possibility of reuniting with director Guillermo del Toro for Hellboy III or The Hobbit.

What is The Devil's Tomb?

Perlman: That's a film I did that Jason Connery directed. I'd heard there was this movie floating around with Jason directing it. I'd worked with his dad [actor Sean Connery]. And it was with Ray Winstone and Cuba Gooding. I just said, "Hmm, OK, I'm in. No problem." I haven't seen it yet. It's another one of these films that I do a lot of, high-concept, small amount of resources. So I'll be curious to see how that one's turned out.

What do you play?

Perlman: I play a scientist who has been missing on this genome project. He's been doing this genome project in the Middle East, and he goes missing. A force is sent out to go find him, and when they find him, he's kind of evolved into this eccentric, strange place in his mind. Obviously he's been affected by something, and it's turned him from being this mild-mannered man of science into this Col. Kurtz sort of mentality. I think that's what I play. It's hard to keep them all straight.

Word is that you may take over the Elvis role from Bruce Campbell if and when Bubba Nosferatu: Curse of the She-Vampires comes to pass. How close is that to happening?

Perlman: It's looking good for maybe late fall that we'll get down to principal photography. I'm on board. Paul Giamatti is on board [to play Colonel Tom Parker]. Don is on board. The script is finished. They are thinking that the resources are finally in place. And when I get done with season two of [his F/X TV series] Sons of Anarchy, I think I'll have a little window at the same time Paul does, and we hope to do it then.

Lastly, have you heard from Guillermo del Toro about either a possible third Hellboy film or doing something in the Hobbit films?

Perlman: Well, Hellboy III, ... Guillermo has turned his attention to the Hobbit movies. I can't tell you yet whether I'll have any place in the Hobbit movies or not. Hellboy III, I think it's a little premature for discussions on that.
