SCI FI tested Beyond and SFC along with Syfy

On a conference call with bloggers to discuss the brand evolution from SCI FI to Syfy, SCI FI Channel president Dave Howe revealed two other ideas the network tested during the naming process: SFC and Beyond.

Howe said he could reveal those names because there was no way the network would have been able to use either of them due to issues such as owning the trademark or securing the URL. "Which is why having a made-up name is more open and enables you to give it the perception and values you want it to have," he added.

He said viewers who dislike the idea of changing the spelling of the name would probably have been more upset with a total change.

"The conversation that we're having today and the feeding frenzy in the chat rooms and online would have been considerably greater if we changed the name completely."
