Exclusive: Diablo Cody talks Jennifer's Body

Diablo Cody, left, talks with host David Letterman on the set of The Late Show with David Letterman in New York on Jan. 22, 2008, after being nominated for an Oscar for Juno; she won the award last year.

Diablo Cody, who wrote the script to the teenage possession movie Jennifer's Body, told SCI FI Wire that she has seen a cut of the film and it is a great relief. Karyn Kusama directed the second produced script from Oscar-winning Juno screenwriter.

"Karyn's direction was incredibly faithful to the script, but it's interesting, because with comedy, you can kind of sense how it's going to play out," Cody said in an interview Wednesday in Universal City, Calif., where she was promoting her new Showtime series The United States of Tara. "Horror, you don't know if it's going to be scary or not. So, for me, the relief was seeing 'Oh, good, it worked.' We were able to create the tension."

In the film, Megan Fox plays a possessed cheerleader who murders her classmates. "It's just a throwback to the movies I loved in the '80s: teenagers in peril, blood and fun, I think," Cody said.

Cody was also thrilled to see the gory scenes she wrote brought to life on the set. "They're practical effects," she said. "It wasn't a CGI movie. That was really interesting, the first day they drag in the fake latex body that looks exactly like your actor, you're just like, 'This is really strange.'"

In an earlier group interview, Cody addressed her trademark dialogue from Juno as it pertains to Jennifer's Body. "I had actually written it a long time ago, when I was kind of in that same mode," Cody told the group of reporters. "So it definitely has that kind of high-school, dialogue-heavy feel to it. But there's also people being murdered a lot, so that's changed."

Jennifer's Body is as close to Cody's heart as Juno, but fans of the teenage pregnancy comedy may have a different reaction. "I love it," she told the group. "It's screwed up in a good way. It's definitely not heartwarming, so I think it'll maybe surprise in that sense." Fox Atomic will release Jennifer's Body on Sept. 18.
